Centre for Social work , Panjab University in association with Amar Karma Organ Donation Society , Canada organized a Seminar on the theme “Amar Karma- Saving lives by Organ Donation” at Panjab University Chandigarh on 16th march 2016. Loveen Kaur Gill, founder of the Amar Karma Society was the key note speaker at the event. Ms. Nilakshi Sharma, an alumnus of centre for social work, PU was the special guest speaker. Both the speakers shared their experiences about the awareness about organ donation amongst the people of Canada and India respectively. During the seminar students and audience raised some serious questions about myths and false beliefs about organ donation. Kulwinder singh saini, a volunteer with Amar Karma society shared his own real life experience about the eye cornea transplant involving his son and stressed the need for more awareness about the whole body donation. Loveen kaur Gill talked about the donation of umbilical cord and how it can save lives. Taking the volunteers through facts and myths about Organ donation, She talked about Brain Death and the ever increasing waiting list for Organs failure patients. Mr Gaurav Gaur, Assistant Professor , Centre for Social work stressed the need to spread the word and every student in the audience not only signed the 'Donor Card' as a token of their pledge for Organ Donation but also promised on to spreading the word around to their families and friends. while, Bahadur Singh , a volunteer from Eye Donation Association , Hoshiarpur proudly claimed that Hoshiarpur is the first district in India which has achieved 100 percent eye transplant rate and Ms. Nilakshi revealed that chandigarh is the top ranked city in India with highest rate of Organ transplants per million population.
“The event was a success in many ways as it brought awareness among the students of Panjab university and most of the students pledged to donate their organs after the event,” said Gaurav Gaur, Asst. Prof. at the centre.
